Shimizu has a history of more than 100 years as an international trading port. The nearby shopping center “S-Pulse Dream Plaza” has become a popular spot in recent years. With sailboats that cruise Suruga Bay and sightseeing boats that come and go from the pier, you can enjoy pleasant excursions at sea.

Snippets
The famous cherry blossom trees that line the Potomac River in Washington D.C. originated in Shimizu. The first cherry blossom trees that Japan sent had to be destroyed because they had harmful insects. For this reason, the Okitsu Branch of the agricultural testing center, which had the latest technology in Japan at the time and is currently the fruit tree testing center of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, developed an exclusive variety of cherry blossom trees, and these were sent to the United States.
This plaza is a conglomerate of various facilities, such as a movie theater, museum, fresh food market, restaurants and shopping mall. It is an enjoyable amusement center.

This street is close to S-Pulse Dream Plaza. There are concrete footprints of soccer players and other monuments.

Shimizu S-Pulse is the first citizens’ team in the J-League and is based in Shimizu of Shizuoka City. The Nihondaira Sports Park which is the team’s homeground, is a soccer stadium with a capacity of 20,000 spectators. The team trains in Miho as it aims to be the best in Japan.
This is a “Port Museum” exhibiting the history and future of the Port of Shimizu.

These are a speedy ferries operate where there is no heavy traffic and with magnificent Mt. Fuji in the background. It only takes 65 minutes between the ports of Shimizu and Nishi-Izu-Toi. The ride is gentle and there is little disturbance from the waves.

Snippets
This is a famous confection of Shimizu that was created in 1695. This sweet bean jelly is wrapped in bamboo leaves and steamed. Made of sugar cane, a thriving industry at the time, it was said to be one of the favorite sweets of the Tokaido Road. There is an old road sign on the corner of the Oiwake Yokan shop, located at the leading to the Port of Shimizu and to the Tokaido Road.
These facilities are used for events and conferences. The Port of Shimizu can be seen from the rooftop.The marine goods sold in the lobby are quite popular.

The temple grounds contain the graves of Jirocho and his followers. There is also the only bronze statue of Jirocho in Japan here, honoring him as the hero of the underdog.
