■If You Lose Your Passport or Become Involved in a Crime.

Call the Police Department. Dial 110 (no area code necessary).
All calls anywhere in Japan are handled on a 24-hour basis.

■How to Call the Police Department

  1. Pick up the receiver, and if there is an emergency button on the telephone, press it before dialing 110. If there no emergency button, simply dial 110.
  2. Explain why you are calling; state whether you are calling because of a traffic accident or a crime such as a robbery, etc.
  3. Give your name and the location of the incident, or the address and landmarks near by.

■For Sudden Illnesses or Injuries

Call the Fire Department. Dial 119 (no area code necessary).
All calls anywhere in Japan are handled on a 24-hour basis.

How to Call the Fire Department

  1. Similar to calling the police, press the emergency button before dialing 119, or simply dial 119.
  2. Since the Fire Department dispatches both the fire brigade and ambulances, explain whether you need the fire brigade or ambulance.
  3. Give your name and the location or address and landmarks near by.
